Description

Iv been asked a few times about how i do roans to here we go

Roans are created when the horse has the roan gene (Rn) and it can appear over any coat colour. The horse gets a lighter look to the coat as it makes some of the horses hair white creating a flecked look.

  1. I fill the base my darkest colour then pick a slightly lighter colour with the soft brush go over it avoiding the head and legs
  2. with a slightly lighters colour i build the lightness making it more heavy around the horses back bone and where shown above
  3. again with a slightly lighter colour i go over my wanted roan bit giving it a light texture using the roan brush
  4. with an almost white colour with the opacity down build up the texture and colour again lighter white on the back bone
  5. tadaaa keep playing till you get the look you want
Remember when making a roan:
  • It does not effect eye colour
  • it does not effect hooves
  • it does effect the skin making it freckled
  • it can effect the horses main and tail
  • it should be heaviest on the horses main body and rarely on its legs and head
  • All roans are different some can be almost white some hardly change the colour
  • Roan can effect any coat colour such as black, bay, palomino, dun ect
  • it can make some marking 'bleed'
  • it can be patchy and have some strong white spots or normal colour coat parts
